What is writeconfig on Mac?

System Administration writeconfig · seed · quit hint: caution

writeconfig is a macOS process (listed here as System Administration writeconfig) — also matched as com.apple.systemadministration.writeconfig. People usually find it in Activity Monitor when asking “what is this process?”

What does writeconfig do?

writeconfig is the SystemAdministration.framework system XPC that applies privileged configuration changes on behalf of entitled Apple tools—user and group accounts, Sharing, firewall configuration, and related files. System Settings and sysadminctl start it when those admin changes need to be written. You need it for those settings to save; quitting mid-change can leave an update incomplete until relaunch.

Is it safe to quit writeconfig?

Hint: caution. SystemWoe Free and Pro refuse to quit protected apps or Time Machine — Pro adds force-quit only with confirmation.
