What is Signal on Mac?

Signal · seed · quit hint: usually safe

Signal is a macOS process. People usually find it in Activity Monitor when asking “what is this process?”

What does Signal do?

Signal is Signal Messenger’s official Mac desktop client for private messaging (bundle org.whispersystems.signal-desktop, team U68MSDN6DR). You link it to Signal on your phone; it runs when you open Signal.app and stays available for chats, calls, and notifications. You need it while using Signal on this Mac; quitting stops desktop messaging and notifications until you reopen it (the phone app keeps working).

When to leave Signal running

  • signal-desktop-in-use
  • signal-call-in-progress

Is it safe to quit Signal?

Hint: usually safe. SystemWoe Free and Pro refuse to quit protected apps or Time Machine — Pro adds force-quit only with confirmation.
